The Multicultural Structure of the Faculty

The „Babeș-Bolyai“ University is a multicultural university with multilingual historical traditions. According to the current regulations, the university is organized into study lines: the Romanian, Hungarian, and German lines have separate structures and are organized according to their own regulations and institutions. At the Faculty of Letters, representation of all lines is ensured at all administrative levels, and the three lines work together to provide intercultural education, reflecting the pluralistic character of one of the most important faculties in Romania. The Romanian Line is led by the current dean.

The Hungarian Line

The Hungarian line at the Faculty of Letters is based on three major historical departments:
  • Department of Hungarian Literature
  • Department of Hungarian Language and General Linguistics
  • Department of Hungarian Ethnography and Anthropology
Within this line, there are nationally and internationally recognized sections and specializations with outstanding research results, such as:
  • Hungarian Language and Literature
  • Comparative Literature in Hungarian
  • Hungarian Ethnography
  • Cultural Studies in Hungarian
  • Finnish Language and Literature
  • Master’s programs in Hungarian Language, Literature, Ethnography, and Anthropology
  • Doctoral School of Hungarology
The leadership of the line is ensured by a faculty member elected every four years, according to an internal regulation. The elected director becomes the nominated pro-dean for the Hungarian line. Leaders of the Hungarian Line (in the role of Chancellor/Pro-Dean):

  • Pozsony Ferenc (2004–2008)

  • Czegenyi Dóra (2020–2024)

The German Line

The German line is formed through the Department of German Language and Literature, whose director is also the leader of the German line at the faculty level.
