Department of Comparative Literature
The Department of Comparative Literature offers studies of excellence throughout the academic path: a bachelor’s program (3 years program), a master’s program (2 years program), a PhD program (3 year program) at the highest academic level in Romanian universities. In a faculty of tradition, under the guidance of experienced teachers, researchers with national and international prestige, you can prepare to become researchers in the field of comparative literature and cultural studies, teachers, editors, cultural managers, publishers, translators, publicists and many others. Comparative literature has a long tradition here: in 1877, Hugo von Meltzl published the first comparative literature review in the world, “Acta comparationis litterarum universarum”, at the University of Cluj. Among the professors who have taught this discipline one can find Dumitru Popovici, Liviu Rusu, Ion Pulbere, Cornel Capusan, Liviu Petrescu, Ion Vartic, Vasile Voia. The comparatist Adrian Marino, a well-known personality in the field, also lived in Cluj. Nowadays, the comparative literature is part of the main disciplines at the Faculty of Letters and is taught for two semesters (in the Bologna system) for students of Letters in their second year of study. In the current context of globalization and of Romania’s integration into the European community, comparative literature is perhaps the most open discipline for the valorization of various national cultures and literatures. Transdisciplinary circulation between history of religions and history of ideas, research in imaginary studies, imagology, European studies, cultural studies, gender studies, theoretical reconstruction of discipline, finally, the promotion of comparative literature in Romanian universities and its compatibility with global developments are some of the reasons for the creation of the department and of our current concerns.
